Day 31 - Paint your Own Pottery

This is a great hot day activity for kids! We visited All Fired Up in Carytown and painted some pottery. First we picked our piece of unfinished pottery (items started at $3-$4 and up), then selected our paints and got started decorating them. There were stencils, stamps and even idea books for help. And it will only be 7 days until we can pick them up.

A couple quick notes - the paints are non-toxic and should wash out of all clothing (we had success but you never know - so wear old clothes). And the pottery is food safe once finished.

Cost: Everyone pays a studio fee plus the cost of their piece of pottery - visit the website for more details.

Day 30 - James River Park System

The James River Park System is the largest park in Richmond, encompassing 500+ acres along the banks of the James River. This park offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, jogging, swimming, hiking, rock-climbing, fishing, boating, sunning, and bird watching. Two of the most popular areas within the park system are Belle Isle and Pony Pasture. To really enjoy your visit, avoid peak weekend afternoons.

Belle Isle is found downtown (near the financial district) in the middle of the James River. The island is the site of a notorious Civil War prison and the remains of a historic iron foundry are still visible. Belle Isle can be accessed from the northside of the River by a pedestrian bridge suspended directly under the Lee Bridge. Free parking is available in the Belle Isle parking lot just past the Tredegar Iron Works or along 5th Street, a porta potty is located on the island.

Older kids enjoy riding their bikes across the bridge and around the island trail (approx one mile), wading in the shallows of the river, sunbathing, and climbing on the rocks when water levels are low.

Pony Pasture is located on the south bank of the James a mile or so east from the Huguenot Bridge on Riverside Drive. There is ample parking and restrooms. Pony Pasture offers walking and bike trails, bird watching, rock climbing, and fishing.

The penned animals are available to be seen and fed anytime Maymont is open, but the Children's Farm Barn is only open during more limited hours.

If you are feeling adventurous, walk down the hill behind the barn to see native Virginia wildlife in natural settings like fox, deer, back bears, and hawks. Beware; this is a steep walk that usually requires a stroller for little ones on the way back up!

Day 12 - Regal Cinemas Free Family Movies

Today we visited the Short Pump Regal Cinema for a free family friendly movie! They offer both a G and PG rated film at 10am every Tuesday and Wednesday now through August 19th. What fun we had - the only cost was the popcorn and drinks. Such a budget-friendly activity!

A couple tips - get there early - lines do form. We were about 30 minutes early and that worked well. Also - grab a booster seat before heading to the theater for your little ones if you think they might need it. The Short Pump theater has stadium seating so my elementary aged kids could see over an adults head without any trouble. But kids preschool-aged enjoy using them. It is also helpful to go with a friend and their children so you can tag team snack purchases, seat grabbing and potty breaks. They do allow sippy cups which is also helpful with little ones.

Definitely worth trying!!

Day 11 - Metro Richmond Zoo

What a day at the Metro Richmond Zoo!!

The Richmond Metro Zoo is located in Chesterfield County. Opened in 1995, it is a 14 acre site that is home to approximately 700 animals that are exhibited in natural settings. The zoo has all kinds of animals including lions, tigers, zebras, kangaroos, camels, farm animals, and a huge collection of primates. The only thing missing is an elephant.

The main attraction at the zoo is the giraffes. You can touch and feed them by hand from a platform – just be ready for their big long tongues and long eyelashes. The littlest kids often enjoy holding the food in a cup, allowing the the giraffes to scoop the food out with their tongues. But be careful - they will try to snatch your cup away :)

Visitors can also feed food pellets to some of the farm animals. We were lucky enough to feed the newest additions at the zoo - several baby animals including deer and camels. They were adorable!

And if you are especially lucky you might get to see one of the animals being fed by the zoo staff. It is a great thrill to see them feed the crocodiles!

Located at: 8300 Beaver Bridge Rd, Moseley, VA 23120 Phone: 804.739.5666 http://www.metrorichmondzoo.com/index.shtml

A couple of things to know before you go:

· Restrooms: Are located at the main gate and near the penguin exhibit and safari ride entrance.

· Buy your giraffe feed when you purchase your tickets.

· Make note of the penguin feeding times (they are posted on the website under “Animal Encounters”)

· An annual pass or membership is a great investment if you plan to visit more than twice a year.

· There are also several rides on the property. A Safari Sky Ride, Jungle Carousel and some smaller kiddie rides. Make sure you check out the new Train ride that takes you on a 15 trip through the African Savannah.

· And a new picnic area has been added near the entrance to give visitors a place to rest and have a snack.

Hope you have a great time!

Day 10 - Meadow Farm/Crump Park

Today we visited - Meadow Farm/Crump Park Playground at 3400 Mountain Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060

Meadow Farm/Crump Park has a playground with all kinds of fabulous equipment for kids. The toddler area is huge with three miniature houses, a fire truck, a train, and a climbing apparatus with slides. The park also has a giant piece of play equipment for older children to enjoy that includes multiple slides, monkey bars and a crank-driven platform. This is a well laid out playground for families with kids of all ages.

Meadow Farm/Crump Park is also home to a 19th century farm and museum. The farm is home to sheep, pigs, cows, and a few other farm animals. The farm and musuem are within walking distance of the playground - but beware - it can be a tough walk for little ones.

Day 8 - Cow Appreciation Day

Cow Appreciation Day at Chick-fil-A is alot of fun and a great deal! If you dress like a cow, you get a free meal. This counts for adults and kids alike!

My kids and I spent the morning cutting out cow spots from felt and gluing them on white t-shirts. Then we created a tail and a hat with ears. It was alot of fun and everything was dry before lunch. We headed to our local Chick-fil-A, said 'Moo' and went to our table with a bunch of free kids meals.

If you happened to miss it - this is an annual event (usually in July). Here is the website for add'l details.

Day 7 - Play Areas at Short Pump Mall

Today we visited the Short Pump Mall to check out the indoor and outdoor play areas. The indoor play area is located in the food court - and is a very fun area for kids to run around on soft climbing structures in an enclosed area (although there is no gate in the entrance). There is a bench for parents to sit, but bringing strollers into the play area is difficult, so they are generally parked around the perimeter. There is a children’s height limitation (36 or 42 inches if I remember correctly) and they must take off their shoes.

The outdoor children’s play area is located in the Main Plaza close to Dick’s Sporting Goods and has two small playhouses that children can explore. This area is also home to the Short Pump Express, a mini train that children (and parents) can ride for a short trip around the mall main plaza. The Short Pump Express tickets are available for $2 at Guest Services (under the escalator). Click here for more details on train hours http://www.shortpumpmall.com/info/shortpumpExpress.cfm

Day 6 - Chuck E. Cheese

Usually when I hear those 3 dreaded words, Chuck E. Cheese, I cringe and want to run in the other direction. But I have a couple kids who love these games and the whole tickets-for-trinkets thing. So we went for a visit today and I think I have found a few secrets to making it a successful outing. First off the place opens at 9am, which means you can avoid the crowds (and germs) by getting there early before lunch. We arrived at 9:15 and were one of three families sharing the games. We also grabbed one of the coupons from the Sunday paper and that made the token purchase very reasonable. My three little ones ran around and played games until their hearts content and then traded their tickets for a few lollipops and a ring. When we left less than 2 hours later and everyone had a smile on their face.

Enjoy!

Tuesday

Day 5 - Free Bowling

Here's a great activity for a hot, hot day! Several of the AMF Bowling Alleys in the area offer 2 free games of bowling for kids every day of the summer. Alot of fun for my kids and their friends today (and it kept them out of the heat for awhile). Visit the website for additional details. It is necessary to register beforehand and you must select one of the 3 alleys in the area as your preferred location. There is also a family pass that allows additional discounts for grown-ups.

Although there were a few fees involved once we reached the bowling alley - it was still a great deal!

Day 4 - Free Summer Reading Programs

Okay...this isn't an outing, but it is something fun and important to do with your kids - summer reading. Barnes & Noble and Border's both have programs were your children can earn a book as a reward for completing their reading program. Best part - you can take them to check out those free books at the store where they sit on display. A great incentive to get kids going. The local county libraries also offer summer reading programs - for example Henrico County Libraries give kids a coupon for a free IceCream Dream Cone at Chick-fil-A just for registering, and after 5 books they earn a Slurpee.

Below are the links to Barnes & Noble, Border's and the local county libraries.

Day 3 - Water Play at Stony Point Fashion Park

Although it wasn't the hottest day on record - my children had a ball running through the water play area at Stony Point Fashion Park. The fountain is located just outside the Dick's Sporting Goods store. The water sprays shoot out of the ground with alternating pressure and pattern. Kids of all ages loved running through the area trying to either get hit, or avoid it all together. It took some a little longer to get wet - but everyone was soaked and full of smiles before it was all over. Best of all it was free fun!

It was helpful that the kids were in their bathing suits before we arrived and had water-proof shoes on (like Crocs) to protect their feet. There is a family bathroom fairly close to the fountain where children can change into dry clothes when they are finished. And make sure to remember the towels and sunscreen!

Enjoy!

Thursday

Day 2 - Humphrey Calder Community Playground

Humphrey Calder Community Playground is located at 414 N. Thompson Street, Richmond, 23221. This city park is different from most because it is covered with sand in many places (rather than mulch). The park overlooks I-195 and a major railway artery. Children of all ages are thrilled when trains pass by below and they often idle, so kids can get a great look at all the train cars.

There is a toddler friendly area with swings, slide, seesaw and miniature train. Older kids will love the big playground climbing equipment and huge corkscrew slide - it must be a story and a half high! Kids can also enjoy the large fields that are adjacent to the playground for any kind of games - tag, kickball, soccer, etc. Plus there are picnic tables and restroom access at the playground (and in the community center when open).

Parking can be tricky since Thompson is a one-way street. The best approach is from Grove Avenue, head north on Thompson and look for the brown parking signs that point to a lot behind the fire station and community center. Or use the off-street parking on the neighboring side streets.

Enjoy!

Wednesday

Day 1 - Blueberry Picking

What a beautiful day for blueberry picking! We took a trip to Swift Creek Berry Farm in Moseley and picked until we couldn't pick anymore. The berries were a great size and super sweet!

Allowing children to experience picking their own fruit or vegetables can be an educational experience and a lot of fun! Blueberries are an easy pick-your-own option for kids of all ages because the bushes allow even the littlest child to spot a 'purple' berry and the buckets are easy to carry. Stay away from the pink and white ones - they just aren't ripe yet - but at $2.09 a pound and no admission fee, it won't matter if a few jump in your bucket.

A couple quick notes - Wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes into the field. And check them for smushed blueberries on the bottom when you are through - you don't want those all over your car. Also, blueberries are easy to freeze if your family goes a little crazy!

There are several other places to pick your own blueberries (and other fruits) in the Richmond area - check our website for additional options.

Enjoy!
